The Kitchen Sloth Slices a Mango

The Kitchen Sloth Slices a Mango

Here it is guys – the Kitchen Sloth way to slice a mango. Alright, I did not invent this way, but I give it my Kitchen Sloth stamp of approval that is is the easiest way and also least likely to slice off fingers in the process. Win win win.

Other ways I have tried and deemed more perilous to my appendages:

  • Peeling first with a vegetable peeler and then slicing (slippery!)
  • Trying to hack slices off of the pit (tiny sad pieces of mango and tons left on the pit)
  • Giving up and going to the store to buy pre-sliced mango (you do what you have to do)

Here’s how to get these nice, pretty slices of mango with as much fruit as you can get:

STEP 1) OBSERVE YOUR MANGO

See how it’s oblong? The pit runs that way. We’re going to slice around the pit. The pit is running between my thumb and index finger, and there are “cheeks” on either side – that’s where all the fruit is.

STEP 2) SLICE OFF THE MANGO “CHEEKS” FROM EITHER SIDE OF THE PIT

Slice off both “cheeks” – start at the top of the mango and start slicing down – you’ll feel the pit. Let the knife glide around it. You’ll get two big pieces of fruit from the “cheeks.” I got lucky with this one – the pit is pretty small here – a lot of times they’re much bigger – that’s ok!

STEP 3) CUT SLICES

Slice the sides of the center piece around the pit – just one slice from each side. Slice the “cheek” side pieces into nice big slices too.

Don’t throw the pit away! Take a break from all of your mango cutting and eat the pieces off the pit that you can’t cut off. It will get in your teeth but this is ok. It is delicious and this is your reward for being the person who is cutting up the mango.

STEP 4) SLICE THE SKIN OFF

Next, slice the skin off – slide the knife under the skin at the end of each slice and it will come right off! Just like filleting a fish. Which I have not done – but… it seems like it’s similar. I promise it’s not as hard as it may sound – if it’s a ripe mango, the knife just glides by the skin and it comes off easily. A sharp knife helps too!

ALTERNATE STEP 3) HEDGEHOG, NOT SLICES

If you don’t want to make slices, you can also do a “hedgehog” pattern. This works well if you want to dice the mango for salsa. Then you can run the knife under the skin to get diced mango.

Or flip it a little bit inside out and eat it right off the skin. Mmmmm.

Whatever way you want to cut it – enjoy some fresh, juicy mango! I took my slices when we went camping. 10/10, would recommend.
